Armando, The Giant Killer

by Randy Shaw on May 30, 2007

It began Tuesday night with a walk. Then a balk. Then a sacrifice. Then a ground out. And with the Giants one out away from winning an emotional 12-inning victory on the first game of a road trip against the Mets, Armando balked the runner home from third. Giants announcer Mike Krukow, as big a homer as there is in baseball, could not help himself—he called Benitez’ second balk inexcusable. After his two balks allowed the Mets to tie the game, Benitez went out in style—he gave up a game-winning homerun to Carlos Delgado to end the game. If Brian Sabean has any sense, Benitez will not be on the plane home to SBC.
