If you couldn’t understand after reading
Saturday’s Chronicle why Supervisor Jake McGoldrick is upset with Mayor Gavin Newsom over a transit deal, that’s because the paper confused two different agencies – the MTA and the SFCTA. The Municipal Transportation Agency (MTA) governs Muni – and the Mayor appoints all its seven Commissioners. The SF County Transportation Authority (SFCTA) is a state-mandated body that allocates transportation dollars – and consists of the Board of Supervisors. McGoldrick’s Charter Amendment would have changed who serves on the MTA, whereas Newsom’s ordinance replaces the Board of Supervisors on the SFCTA with another group of electeds. Both initiatives deal with transit, both can be construed as “power grabs,” and McGoldrick believes that Newsom “broke a deal” to drop his SFCTA initiative after the MTA Charter Amendment died. But you wouldn’t get that from the Chronicle – which apparently thought the initiatives dealt with the same agency.
