May Day is not, as
you wrote, to "commemorate the Haymarket Riot." That was a police attack on a peaceful assembly to protest police violence against strikers during the national general strike for an 8 hour day ... the only national general strike in the history of the USA. The government used the bomb that someone threw at the police during the police riot as a pretext to round up and prosecute radical leaders of the Chicago labor movement who were also active in promoting the general strike in the city for the 8 hour day. These people were revolutionaries, members of the International Working People's Association. Four of them were hanged, one committed suicide and three were sent to prison. The men who were hanged are known as the Haymarket Martyrs and May Day became an international labor holiday to commemorate them.
