Meridian Gallery’s Meridian Interns Program (MIP)Restoration Project

Meridian Gallery and its Meridian Interns Program created three public murals in the city of San Francisco in the last ten years. This fall, a team of former youth interns came together to restore Tenderhart, a 13x48’ mural on the exterior wall of a Tenderloin SRO hotel, Hartland Hotel that had been vandalized by graffiti. The restoration team is a group of the youth artist that painted the original mural in 2001. These young men and women, now in their twenties, are all graduates of the Meridian Interns Program. They have announced that with a few hours of work from some of their peers from the original project will have the project completed in the coming weeks.

In celebration of the community that has contributed so much, the Tenderloin Housing Clinic will be throwing a block party on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 3:00pm. The public is welcome to join us in food, music, and the dedication of the mural.

The muralist who are restoring and reinvigorating the mural for the next generation of Tenderloin residents are Joseph Aponte, Nhat Le, Louis Hidalgo, Brian Lei, Alan Khum, Jason Pons, Chris Anchete, and Sadat Collins.

It is our plan to incorporate the maintenance of Meridian Gallery’s two other public murals into the Tenderhart restoration project. In 2000, MIP created Urban Nature at the Powell Street BART Station. In the summer of 2006, Regeneration was created in the Presidio. A fourth mural hangs in the headquarters of the Mayor’s Youth Employment and Education Program [MYEEP.]
