In a people-powered victory, Nebraska Democrat Scott Kleeb trounced his opponent last night in the U.S. Senate primary by a 69-25 margin. Kleeb now faces a daunting task in November against Republican Mike Johanns, but the state's largest paper previewed what will be a favorable contrast between the two candidates: “Kleeb, a youthful politico pushing change, will face Johanns, a savvy veteran selling experience.” With 2008 being the year of change, this dynamic will help Kleeb.

The GOP also suffered a huge defeat last night in a Mississippi special election, where Democrat Travis Childers beat Republican Greg Davis by a 54-46 margin. Republicans tried to use Barack Obama to attack Childers, by using a TV ad with Rev. Jeremiah Wright. But even in the state's most conservative district, it didn't work.
