Progressives upset that Democrats came one seat short of re-taking the Wisconsin State Senate should realize that many (including myself) simply failed to manage expectations. While they only defeated 2 of the six GOP Senators in last week’s recalls, these battles were all waged on Republican turf. Governor Scott Walker won these districts in 2010, and each of the six Republican were elected in the Obama landslide of 2008. Today, Democrats – plus one GOP moderate who refused to go along with Scott Walker’s union-busting thuggery – control the Senate by a 17-16 majority. But that could change tomorrow, when two Democratic Senators must fend off a recall challenge. Bob Wirch is expected to retain his seat, but it will be a tough fight upstate with Senator Jim Holperin – whose challenger is a Glenn Beck devotee who writes children’s books on the 2nd Amendment. But with Democrats coming short in last week’s recalls, enthusiasm among progressives may have waned – and pundits expect turnout to be low. Now is not the time to be complacent – the campaign in Wisconsin needs helps from progressives, today and tomorrow!
