We have just been informed that Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has signed into law the increased tenant relocation assistance ordinance, which includes other tenant protections and instructs staff to develop an ordinance to restrict demolition and strengthen existing laws to restrict condo conversions. The increased tenant relocation assistance amounts are for all types of no-fault evictions under the Rent Stabilization Ordinance and for condo conversion evictions in exempt units. The increased amounts are retroactive to eviction notices served from April 11, 2007.

A big thank you to all of you who phoned the Mayor's office to urge him to sign the ordinance, and to all of you who have participated in winning this tremendous victory for the tenants of Los Angeles. But the job is not complete. The fight continues to now win a truly meaningful ordinance to restrict condo conversions and housing demolitions, and to stop the evictions and destruction of affordable housing.
