Regarding the second BART strike, I am pessimistic. While I support the right of the workers to raises and agree that BART can afford to give them a reasonable raise, the unions involved have done nothing to garner my support. One of my favorite unions is the National Nurses Union. They have battled for a financial transaction tax, support Medicare For All, and come out for fossil fuel curbs to mitigate global warming. They have allied with National Union of Health Workers in that union’s battle with SEIU. In other words, they go out of their way to show that they have goals that benefit the general public in addition to getting raises and protecting their working conditions. I have never heard of the BART unions doing anything that benefits anybody other than themselves. It is no wonder that the BART Board thinks they can impose a bad contract this time around.
